Chambéry experiences urban violence following driver's death
A series of urban disturbances occurred in the Chambéry neighborhoods of Biollay and Chambéry-le-Haut, as well as in Cognin, following a police traffic stop. The unrest was triggered after a driver, who had been driving dangerously and allegedly refused to comply with police orders, was found with a severe gunshot wound to the head.
The driver, a young man in his twenties, has since died in a local hospital. While initial investigations by the Chambéry prosecutor's office have excluded police gunfire as the cause, authorities are still examining whether the injury resulted from a suicide attempt or an accidental discharge. The prosecutor noted that the subsequent violence may have been fueled by rumors linking the victim's injury to the police intervention.
During the night, dozens of individuals engaged in widespread vandalism, including setting fire to vehicles, trash bins, private buildings, and public structures. A social center was reportedly destroyed. In response, the National Police and CRS 83 reinforcements were deployed to manage the situation. The IGPN has been called in to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
