Chamoli tunnel collapse kills 7 workers at THDC project site FAST-MOVING
A major accident occurred at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand after a landslide caused a sudden influx of water and debris into an under-construction tunnel. The incident, which took place near Pipalkoti, trapped approximately 22 workers inside the structure.
Authorities have confirmed that seven workers died in the tragedy. Rescue operations, involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Indian Army, and local police, have been working to evacuate the site. So far, 18 to 19 workers have been successfully rescued, with several sustaining injuries. At least three workers remain missing or trapped as search efforts continue.
The injured have been admitted to the Gopeshwar District Hospital, with some in serious condition requiring further transfer to specialized facilities. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been monitoring the situation closely, visiting the site to oversee the rescue efforts and meeting with the injured. The construction work at the site is being managed by the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) for the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC).
