Chamonix mayor seeks to limit UTMB event scale

François-Xavier Laffin, the mayor of Chamonix, has expressed a desire to limit the influx of participants, brands, and spectators surrounding the UTMB, one of the world's most prominent trail running events. Laffin argues that the valley lacks the capacity to host hundreds of thousands of people and cited the environmental degradation of the mountains, including melting glaciers and collapsing seracs, as a primary reason for needing to control the event's scale.

The mayor's stance highlights growing tensions regarding the environmental and logistical impact of massive outdoor sporting events. This concern was echoed by recent actions during the Tour de France Femmes, where authorities in the Vaucluse prefecture prohibited public access to the Dentelles de Mont Ventoux massif to manage crowds.
