Chancay-Shanghai maritime route sees significant trade growth
The maritime route between the Port of Chancay in Peru and Shanghai, China, has seen significant growth in 2026. Operated by Cosco Shipping Ports in partnership with Volcan, the corridor recorded 170 trips between January and August, transporting 141,000 tons of cargo valued at approximately US$ 599 million. This represents a 13.7% increase in trips and a 33.3% increase in monetary value compared to the previous year.
The expansion of the Chancay hub is driving regional infrastructure debates. In Brazil’s Acre state, politicians are advocating for the extension of the BR-364 highway to connect with Pucallpa, Peru, to link the Amazon to the Pacific coast. However, the NGO Amazon Conservation warns that such infrastructure could lead to the deforestation of up to 68,500 hectares annually and jeopardize carbon credit revenues. Environmentalists note that while the route aims to facilitate trade with Asia, it also risks increasing land speculation and criminal activity along the border.
