Chance the Rapper wins legal battle against former manager

A Chicago judge has issued a ruling in favor of the artist Chance the Rapper, legally known as Chancelor Bennett, in his ongoing dispute with former manager Pat Corcoran. Cook County Circuit Court Judge James E. Hanlon Jr. ordered Corcoran to forfeit certain vendor-paid commissions and his 15 percent management compensation related to merchandising deals.

The 28-page ruling addresses remaining claims of breach of fiduciary duty that were not decided by a previous jury trial. The judge found that Corcoran had engaged in “secret profit” by taking commissions from Bennett’s vendors on the artist's own orders. The court noted that as Bennett’s agent and fiduciary, Corcoran had a responsibility to act in the artist's best interests, a duty he failed to uphold while managing Bennett’s music, tours, and merchandise.

While the exact repayment amount was not specified in the ruling, Bennett’s representatives estimate that Corcoran may be required to return upwards of $1.5 million. Following the decision, Bennett expressed gratitude in a statement, noting his desire to “finally close this chapter” of his life.
