Friedrich Merz conducts five-day diplomatic and economic tour of Asia

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has concluded a five-day diplomatic and economic tour of Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. Accompanied by a delegation of approximately 30 business executives, Merz focused on strengthening international economic partnerships and advocating for a global network of free trade based on international rules.

In Seoul, Merz addressed the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business, where he called for an alliance of like-minded states to counter unilateralism and autocratic power politics. He advocated for linking existing EU free trade agreements and pursuing new ones with blocs such as ASEAN or the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

During his visit to South Korea, Merz met with President Lee Jae-myung. The leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in defense and intelligence. Merz warned that the deployment of North Korean troops to support Russian forces in Ukraine constitutes a direct threat to European security and freedoms.

In addition to trade, the trip aimed to secure technological cooperation, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and startups. Merz emphasized the need for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own defense in a changing geopolitical landscape.
