Xi Jinping rejects trilateral Ukraine summit with US and Russia

Chinese President Xi Jinping has declined interest in a trilateral summit with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine, according to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. During a state visit to Beijing, Steinmeier reported that Xi expressed visible irritation when the possibility of such a meeting was raised.

While a meeting between the three leaders may still occur on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Shenzhen this November, Xi emphasized that the Ukraine conflict is a European matter and insisted that Europeans must be included in any negotiations. This stance follows a proposal by Vladimir Putin for a trilateral meeting to discuss nuclear disarmament and other strategic issues, an idea that Donald Trump has expressed openness toward.

In a separate diplomatic development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Berlin to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This visit precedes a planned round of discussions between advisors from Russia, Ukraine, and the USA, scheduled for next week in Abu Dhabi. These talks are expected to focus on post-war security agreements, de-escalation, and humanitarian aid. European leaders are currently pushing for a formal role in these negotiations to ensure their security interests are represented.
