Chandebrito faces eucalyptus regrowth nine years after fatal wildfires
Nine years after the tragic October 2017 wildfires in Galicia, which claimed four lives in Chandebrito, the area continues to face challenges with the “unstoppable” regrowth of eucalyptus and acacia species.
Nigrán Mayor Juan González stated that the municipality is better prepared for future disasters due to the creation of the Os Matos-Río Táboas forest park. This initiative covers 42 hectares of land previously burned in 2017 and focuses on eradicating invasive species and implementing new plantations. While the park has helped prevent major fires, the mayor noted that managing invasive regrowth remains difficult.
To bolster local response, the municipality plans to establish a new permanent municipal forest brigade by the end of the year, transitioning from temporary staff to fixed positions.
