Chandigarh suspends Uber and Rapido licenses for six months

The Chandigarh State Transport Authority (STA) has suspended the aggregator licenses of Uber and Rapido for six months, effective immediately. This decision follows previous suspensions of Ola and inDrive, leaving the city with very limited app-based cab options.

According to STA Secretary Nitish Singla, the suspension stems from the companies' failure to comply with the Chandigarh Administration Motor Vehicle Aggregators Rules, 2025. Specific violations include failing to adhere to regulations regarding driver health checks, term insurance, training, and prescribed fares. Additionally, the companies reportedly included non-commercial private vehicles in their vehicle lists, which is prohibited for cab services in the city.

Authorities stated that the companies were given sufficient time and multiple opportunities to rectify these issues. Instead of complying with local regulations, the companies had reportedly requested the implementation of central government guidelines in Chandigarh. Currently, Bharat Taxi, operated by the Cooperative Taxi Cooperative Limited, remains a primary available cab service in the region.
