Chandra Levy investigation details

The disappearance and death of Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old intern with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, was a major news story in the months preceding the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Following her disappearance in May 2001, the Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI conducted extensive searches across Washington, D.C., including more than 240 abandoned buildings and various parks. The investigation drew public criticism regarding the high cost of resources, including a $24 million plan to search landfills that was ultimately abandoned.

Investigators looked into Levy’s relationship with former Representative Gary Condit, who confirmed an affair with her but was never charged. Levy’s skull was discovered in Rock Creek Park in May 2002. While Ingmar Guandique was charged with her robbery and murder, those charges were later dropped.
