Chandrima Bhattacharya resigns as West Bengal TMC chief amid party crisis

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya stepped down from the post of West Bengal state president and all other party positions on 4 July 2026, less than a month after her appointment. In a resignation letter addressed to party chief Mamata Banerjee she withdrew as authorised signatory for the party’s bank accounts and as the TMC’s representative before the Election Commission of India.

Her exit follows a rebel faction of TMC legislators, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, seizing the party headquarters on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. Bhattacharya said she was “hurt” after Banerjee told her she had “handed over the TMC Bhavan”. She added, “I have a grievance against myself that I may not have been able to keep the trust.” The resignation comes amid the party’s internal turmoil after its defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, where the BJP won 208 of 294 seats and the TMC was reduced to 80 seats. Several TMC MLAs have defected to the rebel camp, and Bhattacharya’s son, Sourav Basu, recently joined the dissenting faction.
