Chanel and Cathay Pacific launch 4K restoration of classic Hong Kong films for inflight viewing

Luxury fashion house Chanel, through its Culture Fund, is financing the M+ Restored programme at Hong Kong’s Museum of Contemporary Visual Culture (M+). The initiative will digitally restore nine classic Hong Kong New Wave films from the 1960s‑80s in 4K resolution, cleaning each frame of scratches, colour fade and decay.

Hong Kong‑based airline Cathay Pacific will debut the first three restored titles – The Arch (1968), The System (1979) and Love Massacre (1981) – on its in‑flight entertainment system in Autumn 2026, becoming the first carrier to offer 4K ultra‑high‑definition cinema to passengers. The partnership aims to share Hong Kong’s cinematic heritage with an international audience beyond festival screenings.
