Changhua County political tensions rise amid bribery probes and election maneuvering

Political tensions are rising in Changhua County as the 2026 local elections approach. Changhua County Council Speaker Hsieh Tien-lin and his father, Hsieh Shin-lung, have had their appeals rejected following a court ruling regarding allegations of bribery and corruption. This decision prevents the pair from returning home for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Wei Ping-cheng has criticized the investigation, arguing that the standards for detecting election bribery are vague and inconsistent. Wei expressed concern that the current judicial approach creates fear among local village chiefs and candidates, suggesting that prosecutors are using detention to secure testimony rather than proceeding directly to indictment.

Meanwhile, Taiwan People's Party (TPP) leader Huang Kuo-chang attended the campaign headquarters launch for Su Chih-弦, a candidate for the He-mei District council. Huang emphasized that the TPP will honor its cooperation agreement with the KMT by focusing on securing local council seats rather than fielding a candidate for Changhua County Magistrate. He also called for transparency regarding allegations of nepotism involving the Irrigation Agency and urged consistent legal standards for all political activities.
