Changhua farmers launch mass production of Jin Cui guava

Farmers in Changhua County, Taiwan, have successfully brought the ‘Jin Cui’ guava variety to mass production, marking a significant step in the region's efforts to combat the impacts of extreme weather. The Changhua County Government has been promoting a variety updating program since 2023 to help growers transition from the traditional ‘Pearl’ guava, which often suffers from low sweetness and soft flesh during summer, to the more resilient ‘Jin Cui’ variety.

Developed by Professor Hsieh Ching-chang of National Chung Hsing University, the ‘Jin Cui’ guava is characterized by thick flesh, fewer seeds, a crisp texture, and a core that does not soften easily in summer heat. To celebrate the harvest and encourage quality standards, the Xizhou Township Farmers' Association hosted the second annual Changhua County Quality Jin Cui Guava Evaluation Competition, featuring 25 participating farming groups.

To support this transition, the county government provides a subsidy of 5,000 TWD per fen of land for field management. The initiative aims to stabilize production cycles, increase market competitiveness, and establish a premium local brand to boost farmer income despite challenges such as rising temperatures and heavy rainfall.
