Changhua Magistrate Wang Hui-mei faces KMT backlash over political stances
Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei has faced criticism from Kuomintang (KMT) supporters after repeatedly declining to appear on stage with KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wen. While Cheng visited Changhua four times to support a KMT candidate, Wang chose to accompany President Lai Ching-te during his visits to the region instead.
In a recent social media post, Wang expressed gratitude to President Lai for his attention to Changhua's development, specifically mentioning progress on local infrastructure and industrial projects. She stated she would “do the right thing” and focus on what benefits Changhua. This stance has led to accusations from KMT supporters that she is abandoning her party in favor of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
Separately, Wang announced that the Changhua County Government is addressing concerns regarding overtime pay for local firefighters. The county plans to complete the payout of accumulated overtime compensation for the period between January 2023 and July 2024 by the end of the year to protect the rights and welfare of first responders.
