Changneung New Town prepares for first residents in late 2027

Development of the Changneung New Town in Goyang is accelerating, with the first residents expected to move in by December 2027. The project aims to accommodate approximately 92,000 people across 38,334 households within an 8.12 million square meter area.

Key challenges identified by regional leaders include transportation gaps and the need for economic self-sufficiency. While the GTX-A Changneung Station is scheduled to open in 2030, there is a projected gap between initial occupancy and rail availability. To mitigate this, officials are calling for expanded bus routes and BRT services to be established before the rail line opens.

Another critical factor is the decontamination of soil on land previously occupied by military bases, which accounts for roughly 27% of the total project area. Authorities are monitoring the progress of soil purification and considering legislative amendments to allow for more efficient off-site decontamination processes. Additionally, officials emphasized the importance of attracting actual businesses to the designated self-sufficiency zones to prevent the area from becoming a mere residential suburb.
