Changpeng Zhao predicts Bitcoin could surpass gold in importance

At the Bitcoin Asia 2026 conference in Hong Kong, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) predicted that Bitcoin could surpass gold in importance and market value during the next bull cycle. Zhao noted that while gold's market cap is currently roughly ten times larger than Bitcoin's, the gap is narrowing as investors increasingly view Bitcoin as a primary reserve asset.

Zhao suggested that Bitcoin could reach a price of $1 million much sooner than the 25-year timeframe often discussed. He emphasized that Bitcoin's utility—including its use in large-scale payments, pension funds, and institutional reserves—will be more critical than its price alone. He also recommended that governments establish cryptocurrency reserves, proposing a portfolio of the top five cryptocurrencies by market cap, with Bitcoin accounting for over 50%.

Additionally, Zhao discussed the convergence of AI and cryptocurrency, predicting that the integration will likely begin with stablecoins. He expects AI agents to eventually conduct transactions using digital assets.

Separately, analysts at Bitfinex observed that the correlation between Bitcoin and gold has reached historically high levels, as both assets are increasingly utilized as hedges against government debt and monetary debasement. Grayscale research echoed this sentiment, noting that rising US public debt may drive further investor interest in Bitcoin as an alternative store of value.
