Changwon City Council lawmakers oppose Changwon FC CEO appointment

Democratic Party members of the Changwon City Council are calling for the suspension of Lee Kwang-cheol’s appointment as CEO of Changwon FC. During a press conference on December 12, lawmakers raised concerns regarding Lee’s criminal history, which includes eight recorded offenses: three counts of violence, three counts of drunk driving, and two violations of the Game Industry Promotion Act related to operating illegal gambling establishments.

Although a recent personnel hearing by the Culture and Environment City Committee resulted in a “qualified” rating for Lee, the decision was highly contentious. The committee, composed of six People Power Party members, four Democratic Party members, and one independent, voted to adopt the original report favoring his appointment after a motion to label him “unqualified” was defeated.

Democratic Party representatives argued that a leader of a public institution funded by taxpayer money must demonstrate higher moral standards, especially as a role model for youth players. They have urged Changwon Mayor Kang Ki-yun to halt the appointment and are planning to propose amendments to local ordinances to strengthen the personnel verification system and the effectiveness of future hearings.
