Changwon FC CEO candidate resigns following criminal record controversy
Lee Kwang-cheol, the candidate for CEO of Changwon FC, has resigned following intense scrutiny over his criminal history. The controversy emerged after reports and press conferences by the Democratic Party revealed that Lee had eight prior convictions, including three counts of violence, three counts of drunk driving, and two violations of the Game Industry Promotion Act.
Lee issued a statement on the 23rd expressing regret, noting that his past mistakes had caused significant concern and placed an undue burden on Changwon Mayor Kang Ki-yoon. He stated that continuing in the role would not be beneficial for the citizens of Changwon or the development of the city.
The resignation follows a period of political tension within the Changwon City Council. While the Culture and Environment City Committee had previously passed a report suggesting he was fit for the position, opposition members criticized his background, arguing that a person with repeated criminal offenses was unfit to lead a public club funded by taxpayer money. Changwon FC plans to hold a new open recruitment process for the position soon.
