Changwon hemodialysis center reports 14 Hepatitis C infections
A total of 14 individuals, including 13 patients and one staff member, have been confirmed to have contracted Hepatitis C at a hemodialysis center in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. The outbreak was first identified after two patients were reported infected on September 14, followed by the discovery of a connection to the same facility during an investigation into another patient.
Health authorities, including the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and Gyeongsangnam-do provincial government, conducted comprehensive testing of 75 patients and staff who used the facility since June. While most infected individuals are currently asymptomatic and no severe complications have been reported, an in-depth epidemiological investigation is underway to determine the exact transmission route.
Investigators are performing genetic analysis on environmental and patient samples, reviewing dialysis records, monitoring medical staff movement, and examining CCTV footage to identify potential risks during medical procedures. Authorities have also provided medical links for the infected patients to receive treatment and have conducted infection control training for approximately 50 staff members at the facility.
