Changwon seeks public input to redesign controversial Big Tree landmark

The city of Changwon in South Gyeongsang Province is launching a nationwide contest to seek public proposals for improving the Big Tree, a 40-meter-tall observation structure in Daesang Park. The landmark, which cost approximately 34.4 billion won ($24.4 million), has faced intense criticism since its unveiling last year.

Residents have criticized the structure's appearance, noting it differs significantly from original renderings. Specifically, a planned 20-meter artificial tree was removed from the final design due to safety concerns regarding falling leaves, leaving a bare steel frame that locals have dubbed the “balding tree” or “shame tree.” During a trial period last August, 85 percent of 1,868 surveyed respondents gave the structure negative assessments.

The controversy has expanded into legal and financial scrutiny. Following an audit, Changwon requested a police investigation into a private developer regarding the potential inflation of construction costs. The contest, which runs through September 2, aims to find practical solutions for the structure's design, safety, and usability. An official stated that any official opening is unlikely to occur before next year.
