Chania Coast Guard arrests two men for stealing fish from aquaculture facilities

The Chania Port Authority conducted a maritime operation in Souda Bay following reports that individuals were stealing fish from the experimental aquaculture facilities of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE).

During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned a motorboat, leaving behind a secondary vessel containing nets, fish, and ice. Authorities later located two Greek men, aged 27 and 33, in Almirida while they were attempting to hoist the motorboat. During the arrest, the 33-year-old suspect attempted to evade officers by jumping into the sea before eventually surrendering.

Investigations and video footage suggest the suspects were involved in at least two previous thefts from the same facilities. The total estimated haul of stolen fish exceeds 860 kilograms, with the value of confirmed stolen goods surpassing 10,600 euros. In addition to the fish, the suspects had previously taken cameras and other equipment.

Police seized two boats, two vehicles, a trailer, and 210 kilograms of sea bream and sea bass, which are slated to be donated to local charities. Furthermore, three grinders containing suspected cannabis residues were found in one of the suspects' vehicles and have been sent for laboratory testing.
