Chania fertility clinic trial begins with 33 defendants

A major criminal trial has commenced in Chania, Crete, involving 33 defendants accused of operating a criminal organization through the Mediterranean Fertility Institute. The case, which gained international attention following a 2023 police raid, involves serious allegations including human trafficking, fraud, and the illegal sale and trafficking of genetic material.

Prosecutors allege that the clinic engaged in widespread deception, such as charging patients for medical procedures like embryo transfers and egg retrievals that were never actually performed. The investigation also suggests that genetic material belonging to patients was used to create embryos for other families without consent. Furthermore, the network is accused of exploiting vulnerable women from Eastern Europe through fraudulent egg donation and surrogacy arrangements.

The scale of the alleged crimes is significant, with an estimated 298 female victims identified between 2018 and 2023 and illegal profits estimated to exceed 8.5 million euros. The case has impacted numerous international families, including at least 37 Australian couples who sought services at the clinic. Due to the high number of defendants, witnesses, and lawyers involved, the trial is being held at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania under strict security measures. The proceedings were adjourned on October 14 and are scheduled to resume on November 10.
