Chania: Human remains discovered in olive grove

Authorities in Chania, Greece, are investigating the discovery of human remains, including a skull and bones, found in an olive grove in the Voukolies area of Platanias Municipality. The remains, along with black female clothing and a shoe, were uncovered on October 25 by a landowner performing agricultural work.

Preliminary forensic assessments suggest the remains belong to a woman. Police are conducting DNA testing to determine if the discovery is linked to previous unsolved disappearance cases in the region. One case under review is the disappearance of 75-year-old Saniko Tsavousi from Alikianos in September 2022. However, investigators noted that the clothing found at the site does not appear to match what the elderly woman was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

Authorities are also examining a much older case from 2010 involving the disappearance of 20-year-old student Angeliki Stavroulaki. Additionally, some reports indicate the investigation may look into a disappearance from 2011. The Sub-directorate of Crime Investigation in Chania is leading the efforts, awaiting laboratory results to confirm the identity of the deceased.
