Crete mother arrested after 17-day-old infant suffers severe brain injuries

An 18-year-old mother has been arrested in Crete following the discovery of severe injuries sustained by her 17-day-old infant. The newborn, originally taken to a hospital in Chania, was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Venizelos Hospital in Heraklion due to critical craniocerebral injuries and a brain hemorrhage.

Authorities launched an investigation after medical staff noted that the infant's injuries appeared to be the result of physical trauma. While the mother initially claimed the baby fell from a height, she reportedly later admitted to striking the infant on the face with her hands under psychological pressure.

The mother faces charges of domestic violence and causing serious bodily harm to a minor. She has been granted multiple extensions to appear before an investigating magistrate, with her next scheduled appearance set for Thursday morning. The infant remains in serious but stable condition, currently intubated and under close medical supervision.
