Chania: 18-year-old mother released under strict conditions after infant abuse allegations
An 18-year-old mother in Chania has been released from custody under strict judicial conditions following allegations of abusing her newborn infant. The mother, who reportedly admitted to striking the child, is prohibited from approaching or communicating with the infant.
Additional restrictions imposed by the prosecutor include a ban on leaving the country, mandatory monthly appearances at a local police station, and required participation in a psychological support program. Her defense attorney stated that the young woman is in a severe psychological state and has a history of physical and sexual abuse.
The infant, approximately 17 to 19 days old, remains in critical but stable condition at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Venizelo Hospital in Heraklion. The child is currently receiving intensive care for severe traumatic brain injuries, including hemorrhaging in both cerebral hemispheres. Medical professionals are monitoring the situation closely and awaiting results from scheduled brain imaging to reassess the severity of the injuries.
