Chania Municipal Garden tree fall incident
A large tree suddenly uprooted and fell onto a pedestrian walkway in the Municipal Garden of Chania, Greece. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM on a Sunday. No injuries were reported, as the area was empty at the time due to rainy weather; a planned event by the organization ‘Smile of the Child’ had been canceled because of the conditions.
Deputy Mayor Michalis Tsoupakis stated that the tree had previously been inspected and showed no visible signs of disease or abnormal leaning. To determine the cause of the sudden fall, which occurred despite a lack of significant wind, municipal teams and the Benaki Phytopathological Institute will examine the tree. Investigations may focus on the root system or internal fungal infections that are difficult to diagnose visually.
