Chania Municipality coordinates flood prevention measures

The Local Operational Coordinating Body of Civil Protection (TESOPP) of the Municipality of Chania held a meeting on October 14, 2026, to coordinate services ahead of the winter season. The primary focus of the session was the prevention and management of flood phenomena.

Mayor Panagiotis Simanidrakis convened the meeting to review operational readiness and planning for emergency response to extreme weather events. Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection Giannis Nikiforakis stated that the goal is to evaluate previous wildfire prevention actions and adapt strategies to meet the specific challenges of the upcoming flood season.

To enhance monitoring capabilities, the municipality has procured eight water level gauges and four meteorological stations. The stations are being installed in Malaxa, Souda, Agia Marina, and Mournies. Additionally, bathymeters will be placed at various locations, including the Kladisou and Moroni rivers, Stalos, and near the National Road, to provide early warnings of potential flood risks.
