Chania Municipality negotiates with ETAD for old refrigerator property

The Municipality of Chania is actively negotiating with ETAD S.A. to secure the use of the former ‘Old Refrigerator’ property located east of the Municipal Market. Chania Mayor Panagiotis Simanidrakis stated that the municipality is seeking to halt the current tender process and establish a cooperation agreement to repurpose the site for the benefit of the city.

During a municipal council meeting, officials noted that communication with ETAD has been difficult. The municipality previously sent a formal letter to the leadership of ETAD requesting a meeting, but has yet to receive a response. The Mayor emphasized the political dimension of the issue, noting that ETAD is supervised by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, and called for support from local government MPs.

The current tender for the property, which has seen its deadline extended to October 15, 2026, following a lack of initial interest, involves terms that municipal representatives described as unaffordable. These terms include a monthly rent of 12,500 euros, an 80,000 euro advance payment, and a 30-year commitment subject to consumer price index adjustments.
