Chania teen arrested for riding electric scooter under alcohol influence
A 15‑year‑old was stopped by Chania traffic police in the early hours of 1 August after being found to be riding an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol, without the required insurance and below the legal driving age. The teenager and his 49‑year‑old mother, charged with neglect of a minor, were each fined a total of €1,280 and released by the prosecutor, who ordered a pre‑investigation. Authorities will seek the person who supplied the alcohol at the local festival and the scooter‑rental company that allowed the under‑age rider to use the vehicle. Police chief Eustratia Koulara said checks on scooter use and alcohol consumption at festivals will be intensified.
In a separate incident the same night, a 22‑year‑old woman was injured in a traffic accident in central Chania and was taken to the General Hospital for observation.
