Chania to host seminar on sustainable urban development

The Administrative Chamber of Greece and the Citizens of Chania are organizing a seminar titled “The City from Gray to Green” on October 31, 2026, in Chania. Held in observance of World Cities Day, the event will take place at the Technical Chamber of Western Crete.

The seminar will address critical challenges in urban development, including sustainable urbanization, access to essential services, and the protection of cultural and natural heritage. Key speakers include Kostas Papadimitriou, who will discuss the existential challenges facing local government; Dr. Antonis Kalogerakis, focusing on sustainable urbanization; Sotiris Marinakis, addressing heritage preservation; and Andreas Chiotakis, discussing active citizen participation in decision-making.

Discussions will center on pillars of urban sustainability, such as enhancing public transport and cycling infrastructure, building resilience against climate change (including floods and heatwaves), improving energy efficiency, and ensuring effective waste management. The event also aligns with the 2026 World Cities Day theme of urban regeneration, emphasizing the need for quality, affordable housing and inclusive, climate-resilient neighborhoods.
