Chanishte village faces severe damage from Mariovo wildfires

Large-scale wildfires in the Mariovo region of North Macedonia have caused significant damage, particularly in the village of Chanishte. Reports indicate that over 15 houses and various farm buildings were destroyed as the fire spread rapidly through dry vegetation. Four residents required medical assistance due to smoke inhalation.

Stojanche Angelov, Director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, stated that while Chanishte and three nearby monasteries are currently safe, the fire line is approximately 20 kilometers long and moving toward the village of Krushevica. Emergency efforts involve firefighters from Prilep, specialized teams from the Directorate, and volunteers from Bitola, Kochani, and Vinica.

Aerial firefighting efforts with a police helicopter faced challenges, as wind conditions sometimes caused the water drops to spread the fire rather than suppress it. Ground crews are utilizing specialized vehicles and ‘air tractors’ to create firebreaks. Authorities have warned that the intense heat and shifting winds make the situation highly volatile, and they have urged citizens to take precautions in rural areas.
