Channel 4 rejects BBC merger but considers iPlayer collaboration

Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra has rejected the possibility of a merger with the BBC, stating that such a move would result in a “takeover by the BBC” and reduce viewer choice. Speaking at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention, Dogra emphasized that Channel 4 intends to remain independent despite market challenges.

However, Dogra expressed openness to collaboration, specifically regarding the possibility of Channel 4 content being hosted on the BBC iPlayer streaming platform. She noted that such an arrangement would require careful consideration because Channel 4’s content is monetized through advertising, a model that iPlayer would need to accommodate.

This discussion follows comments from BBC director general Matt Brittin, who suggested that a partnership could help Channel 4 gain necessary scale in a changing market. Meanwhile, industry observers, including Sony Pictures Television’s international production chief Wayne Garvie, have argued that a merger—potentially positioning Channel 4 as the commercial arm of the BBC—could be a viable way for the broadcaster to survive declining advertising income and rising costs.
