Channel 4 to cut 300 jobs in largest workforce reduction in history

Channel 4 is planning to cut approximately 300 jobs, representing nearly a quarter of its workforce, in the largest layoff round in the broadcaster’s 43-year history. The restructuring is being led by Chief Executive Priya Dogra, who took over the role in March, as the company seeks to reduce operational costs and address significant financial pressures.

The broadcaster has faced three consecutive years of pre-tax losses, including a £52 million deficit in 2023 and a £10 million deficit last year. These losses are attributed to a slump in the traditional television advertising market, which accounts for roughly 90 per cent of the network's total revenue. Additionally, cash reserves declined to £49 million at the end of last year, the lowest level in over two decades.

While the final number of roles affected is still being determined, the cuts are expected to focus significantly on London-based positions. Dogra is scheduled to address staff regarding the wide-ranging review of the company’s strategy and structure during an all-staff meeting.
