ChaPanda shares suspended amid suspected IPO manipulation

The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has ordered a suspension of trading for ChaPanda, a prominent Chinese tea beverage chain, following suspicions of IPO manipulation. The SFC expressed concerns that demand for the company’s shares during its initial public offering may have been artificially created through fraudulent schemes.

Regulators have taken action against two suspicious groups and six brokerage firms suspected of participating in the scheme to create a false appearance of subscription demand. As part of the investigation, the SFC has imposed asset disposal restrictions on related accounts, totaling approximately 4.38 billion Hong Kong dollars—the highest limit for such a case in history.

Following the investigation announcement, Hang Seng Indexes Company stated that ChaPanda’s shares will be removed from the Hang Seng Index series. Since its listing in April 2024, the company’s stock price has declined by over 70% from its original offering price. While the investigation is ongoing, the SFC has not explicitly stated that ChaPanda’s management was involved in the suspected misconduct.
