ChaPanda shares suspended by SFC over suspected IPO manipulation
The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has ordered the suspension of trading for tea chain ChaPanda (02555) following suspicions of IPO manipulation. The regulator stated that the company's initial public offering may have been artificially manipulated to create a false appearance of demand for its shares.
The SFC's action is part of a broader crackdown on two suspicious groups allegedly involved in fraudulent schemes. In one instance, the regulator issued restriction notices to six brokerages to freeze assets totaling approximately 4.38 billion HKD linked to Sun Ran and eight related companies. These groups are suspected of using undisclosed agreements to divert IPO proceeds into financial product investments, which may have allowed funds to flow back to primary IPO underwriters or their associates.
ChaPanda's stock price had already declined significantly prior to the suspension, falling 77% from its 2024 listing price of 17.5 HKD to 4.035 HKD. The SFC invoked Rule 8(1) of the Securities and Futures (Listing) Rules, which targets companies providing false or misleading information in listing documents or announcements. SFC Chief Executive Eric Leung emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of IPO manipulation to maintain market integrity.
