Chaparral seismic swarm triggers alerts and school closures in Tolima
A significant seismic swarm has been recorded in Chaparral, Tolima, with the Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC) reporting hundreds of tremors. The activity, characterized by shallow depths of less than 30 kilometers, has been felt across several Colombian departments, including Valle del Cauca, Quindío, Risaralda, Huila, and Cauca.
As of late September 2026, the sequence has included at least ten earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.0 or higher. Authorities are investigating whether this swarm is linked to a major 7.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Chocó on August 10. In response to the persistent tremors, the Gobernación del Tolima has implemented a 'school-at-home' model for approximately 16,700 students in Río Blanco, Chaparral, Roncevalles, and San Antonio to ensure safety.
