Character.AI files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as Disney bids for IP

Character Technologies Inc., the operator of the AI chatbot platform Character.AI, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware federal court. The company, which was once valued at $1 billion, cited significant legal, regulatory, and operational challenges as primary drivers for the filing.

Financial difficulties were largely attributed to the high cost of AI computing. Reports indicate that monthly computing expenses reached between $10 million and $13.8 million, while monthly subscription revenue peaked at only $2.8 million. The company reportedly faced monthly losses ranging from $8 million to $9 million.

In addition to financial strain, the company faced legal scrutiny following lawsuits related to the safety of its platform for minors. The Walt Disney Company has emerged as an initial bidder in the bankruptcy proceedings, offering $20 million for a non-exclusive, perpetual license to certain intellectual property assets.

The company expects the asset sale process to conclude by late November or early December 2026. Character.AI has stated that it intends to maintain its services and active subscriptions while the sale proceeds, though it warned that service may be phased out if a viable buyer is not found.
