Charente man sentenced to 12 years for 32 intentional fires

A criminal court in Charente has sentenced a 32-year-old man, Nicolas Boitrelle, to 12 years in prison for setting 32 intentional fires between July 2022 and October 2023. The arsonist's actions caused significant damage, including the burning of nearly 150 hectares of forest and an agricultural building containing 1,000 tonnes of straw, with total damages estimated at approximately two million euros.

During the trial, Boitrelle admitted to the crimes, stating he sought attention and a sense of belonging through the notoriety the fires generated. Psychiatric experts described his behavior as a way to satisfy a need for recognition, noting that he enjoyed being a subject of conversation in the media. The court also imposed a ten-year period of socio-judicial supervision, an obligation to work and compensate victims, and a ban on residing in Charente or working in the forestry sector.

The series of fires caused significant psychological distress and tension in the South Charente region, leading local citizens to organize their own surveillance patrols. The sentencing follows a request from the prosecutor, who described the defendant as a ‘living bomb’ due to the high risk of recidivism.
