Charité Berlin whitepaper highlights potential of autonomous hospital logistics

A new whitepaper released by the Institute for Medical Informatics at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, in collaboration with Elvio Robotics and the Berlin Simulation and Training Center (BeST), explores the potential of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) to address logistical challenges in hospitals.

The study, commissioned and funded by the Munich-based startup Elvio Robotics, highlights that the primary bottleneck in hospital logistics is not high personnel costs, but a significant increase in vacant positions. Since 2000, there has been a notable decline in staff working in non-patient-facing functional areas.

As these logistics and transport roles remain unfilled, nursing staff are increasingly forced to take over tasks such as transporting laundry, waste, food, sterile goods, medications, and consumables. This diversion of labor reduces the time available for direct patient care. The whitepaper provides a framework for hospitals to evaluate the technical, economic, and organizational benefits of implementing autonomous robotics to automate these standardized transport tasks.
