Charité nursing staff begin three-day warning strike in Berlin

Nursing staff at the Charité hospital in Berlin have entered a three-day warning strike. The labor action, organized by the Verdi union, began on Wednesday morning and is scheduled to continue through Saturday morning.

The strike is a response to the Charité's decision to terminate the relief collective agreement (TV GFB) on August 31, 2026. This agreement regulates staffing levels and provides compensation for working in understaffed conditions. Negotiations to renew the contract have so far been unsuccessful.

The Berlin Labor Court intervened to resolve a dispute regarding the scope of emergency services required during the strike. While Verdi proposed a plan based on weekend staffing levels, the Charité argued that a higher level of service—approximately 80% of normal operations—was necessary to ensure patient safety. The court ruled in favor of the hospital, upholding its requested emergency service plan.

As a result of the strike and the clarified emergency protocols, the Charité announced it will cancel scheduled treatments and limit surgical capacities over the next two days.
