ARD series Charité returns with fifth season set in 1831 Berlin

The German broadcaster ARD has announced the fifth season of its medical drama series, ‘Charité’, titled ‘Charité 1831’. The new season is scheduled to premiere on the ARD Mediathek streaming platform on December 18, 2026, with a television broadcast on Das Erste following on December 22.

Set in the early 19th century, the plot focuses on a cholera epidemic in Berlin that historically claimed the life of philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. The narrative centers on the ambitious junior physician Overath, played by Marlene Burow, who secretly disguises herself as a man to practice medicine. The story explores the challenges of the outbreak and the personal risks Overath faces as her identity is threatened by a former fiancé and suspicious colleagues.

The production features a cast including Philip Froissant, Idan Weiss, Anna Schudt, Dominic Raacke, and Harald Krassnitzer. The series is supported by medical historical expertise from Berlin University Medicine and was filmed in and around Prague.
