Charities and retailers provide food relief to northern communities

Charitable organizations and grocery retailers are providing food relief to communities facing rising demand and food insecurity. In Whitehorse, the Whitehorse Food Bank received a 140-kilogram donation of perishable items, including pre-made microwave meals, from Save-On-Foods following a refrigeration issue at the store. Executive director Dave Blottner noted that usage has climbed steadily over the past year, with the donation providing an extra meal for the 60 to 70 people served daily.

In Iglulik, the charity A Tapestry of Kindness distributed nearly 200 food hampers containing items such as beef, noodles, and flour. Local priest Zbigniew Halemba noted that residents are struggling with food access, sometimes leaving children without meals for days. The charity, funded by CAP Enterprises, plans to continue shipments to other communities, including Kinngait and Nain, before the end of the sealift season.
