Charity organizations call for hair donations to meet rising demand
Non-profit organizations are facing challenges in meeting the growing demand for hair donations used to create oncological wigs and breast prostheses.
In Argentina, the group Pelucas Solidarias Mechones de Vida reported that a shortage of hair, combined with an increase in requests, is hindering their ability to fulfill orders. The organization noted that approximately 400 grams of hair are required to make a single wig. Due to limited raw materials, the group stated they will prioritize requests from individuals who assist by donating hair or promoting donation campaigns.
In Mexico, the DIF of Salvador Alvarado operates a workshop in Guamúchil, Sinaloa, providing free handmade oncological wigs and breast prostheses. Director Rosalinda Cruz Huitrón explained that the initiative aims to alleviate the economic burden on families who must prioritize medical expenses over the high cost of natural hair wigs. The project utilizes donated hair to support children, adolescents, and women undergoing cancer treatments, focusing on improving their emotional well-being and self-esteem.
