Charity warns rough sleeping requires more than housing solutions

A national drive aims to provide a route off the streets for people living in tents or shop doorways by Christmas. While ministers have pledged support beyond housing, advocates argue that ending rough sleeping is ‘not just a housing issue’ due to the complex needs of those affected.

Bill Lewis, an outreach project worker for the charity Streets2Homes in Harlow, Essex, shared his personal experience of homelessness and drug addiction to highlight these challenges. Lewis described his time living in a tent during the winter of 2017 as a cycle of loneliness and destitution, noting that his struggle with cocaine use made maintaining stability difficult even after finding temporary housing.

Lewis, who credits religion and charity for his recovery, expressed skepticism regarding the government's ability to fully resolve the issue without addressing the underlying personal and social problems that persist even after an individual is housed.
