Charles Aránguiz supports ban on greyhound racing in Chile

Chilean footballer Charles Aránguiz has publicly voiced his opposition to greyhound racing, supporting a legislative initiative to ban the practice. Using his social media platforms, the Universidad de Chile and national team midfielder urged empathy ahead of a scheduled vote in the Chamber of Deputies on August 18.

The legislative debate in Congress involves two distinct approaches. One proposal, introduced by Deputy Tomás Hirsch, seeks to prohibit and penalize all dog racing through prison sentences, fines, and restrictions on animal ownership. An alternative proposal by Deputy Pablo Lorca suggests regulating the activity under strict conditions, such as mandatory veterinary presence, limits on daily racing, and prohibitions on torturous training methods, citing the activity as a regional tradition.

In response to the upcoming vote, animal rights organizations like Galgo Libre have organized a demonstration outside the National Congress in Valparaíso.
