Charles Dutoit celebrates 90th birthday and musical legacy

Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit is celebrating his 90th birthday, marking a legacy defined by his long-standing association with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM). During his tenure from 1977 to 2002, Dutoit helped elevate the Canadian ensemble to international prominence, particularly through his interpretations of French repertoire including works by Berlioz, Debussy, and Ravel.

Dutoit’s career includes over 80 recordings and numerous awards, such as two Grammys for Berlioz’s ‘Les Troyens’. While his work with the OSM is often celebrated for its ‘French’ character, his musical interests also extended to Russian composers like Stravinsky. His influence on the classical music scene includes popularizing the genre through outdoor concerts and diverse performance venues.
