Charles Leclerc avoids grid penalty for Spanish GP after Monza crash

Charles Leclerc will avoid a grid penalty for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix following his high-speed crash at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Although the impact exceeded 50G, Ferrari inspections confirmed that his power unit remained intact, requiring only a gearbox replacement rather than a full engine change.

Leclerc is also undergoing medical evaluations to ensure he is fit to compete. Following the accident, he reported blurred vision, prompting further neurological assessments and CT scans to rule out concussion. The driver has expressed feeling physically okay but noted the emotional difficulty of the incident.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur stated that the team has “turned the page” after a disappointing weekend in Monza, where the team earned only eight points. The focus now shifts to the new circuit in Madrid. Ferrari holds a slight advantage in track familiarity, having completed filming laps at the venue in July, though McLaren principal Andrea Stella noted this provides only a minor edge.

Internal tensions at Ferrari also remain a point of interest following on-track friction between Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at Monza. Vasseur acknowledged that while he prefers drivers to race freely, the team may eventually need to implement team orders to protect results.
