Charles Schwab CEO restricts autonomous AI agents from client accounts

Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster has expressed skepticism regarding fully autonomous AI agents managing stock portfolios, citing concerns over liability and loss of control. The brokerage firm is actively blocking unauthorized AI agents, including Meta’s Muse, from accessing client accounts to prevent them from moving money or executing transactions.

Wurster described the pursuit of developing proprietary AI trading strategies for clients as a “fool’s errand,” arguing instead that AI should function as a research tool under human supervision. To balance security with accessibility, Schwab is developing Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. These will allow external large language models to securely access information such as account balances for research purposes without granting the ability to execute trades or transfer funds.

In place of third-party agents, Schwab is promoting its own proprietary conversational assistant, Charley. Unlike autonomous bots, Charley is designed to assist with research, provide insights, and answer account questions while remaining unable to move money. The company reported blocking dozens of unauthorized AI access attempts each week, a security stance shared by other major institutions like JPMorgan Chase.
