The release of Charles Spencer’s new memoir, ‘Swan Song: Diana, My Sister’, has ignited significant controversy involving the British Royal Family and prominent media figures. In the book, Spencer makes several serious allegations against King Charles III, claiming the King appeared ‘giddily elated’ upon hearing of Princess Diana’s death in 1997 and suggesting he expressed contempt for her during funeral arrangements.

Buckingham Palace issued a rare direct response, stating that while the King does not comment on books, he is mindful that ‘the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory’ many years after a loss. This statement was viewed by some as a defense of the King’s character against Spencer’s claims.

Separately, journalist Piers Morgan has threatened legal action against Spencer for a factual error in the memoir. Spencer incorrectly stated that Morgan was the editor of the Daily Mirror when certain controversial photos of Princess Diana were published in 1993; Morgan, however, did not join the publication until 1995. Morgan has demanded the first edition be withdrawn or corrected.

Adding to the conflicting narratives, Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, has publicly disputed Spencer’s account. Burrell described the King as being visibly shaken, pale, and frightened in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, providing a starkly different perspective from the one presented in the memoir.
